Name: Wade Sparg (Captain)
Position: Prop
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: None
Comments: Building on the strong foundations created in 2002, Wade has continued to be an inspirational leader of the Kingsway Crusaders in 2003. His calm, collective approach on the field compiled with his excellent sportsmanship qualities, regardless of the result of the game have vindicated his selection for the captaincy. As well, his on field capabilities lack very little with his excellent try against Ballajura a testament to his hard-working, forward style play.

Name: Ross Litterick (Vice-Captain)
Position: Utility Forward
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: People’s Best on Ground (vs Ballajura)
Comments: In 2003, Ross has become one of the most prominent of the Kingsway forwards. He is a nightmare for opposition teams in all aspects of the game with his bone-crunching tackles and bullocking runs a revelation to his “get out of my way” approach to the game. Upon scoring his first ever try for the team against Lockridge SHS and his brilliant performance a week later against Ballajura, many Player of the Year submissions entailed him “The One” illustrating the fact that if there was ever an “i” in team, it would be referring to Ross Litterick.

Name: John Ardeleane
Position: Prop
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: None
Comments:Together with Wade Sparg, John makes up the driving force in the Kingsway forward pack. Being a massive prop usually means being a puffed out person half way through the first half. However in John’s case, almost the opposite is true and his amazing speed to the breakdown was reflected by his try against Churchlands resulting purely from the fact that he was there to receive the ball before any of the opposition forwards were there to tackle him. As well as this, John’s defence is truly outstanding and his numerous tackles this year have saved Kingsway from being in some very uneasy defensive situations.

Name: Simon Cook
Position: Wing
Year Level: 11
Points Scored in 2003: 10 (2 tries)
Awards: People's Best on Ground (vs Ocean Reef)
Comments: If there were ever to be an award for the best all-rounder on the Kingsway backline, Simon would be a perfect candidate. His skills on the field reflect just that with his speed and running skills already resulting in a fantastic try against Ballajura. Only a few minutes later in that game, almost the same thing happened again but this time he delivered a perfect offload to Brendan Wight who was just bungled into touch inches from the goal line. And again against Ocean Reef, Simon’s pace was too much for about 7 players and he dodged and weaved his way to scoring try of the season. As well as attacking flare, Simon also possesses great skills in both tackling and kicking, making him a perfect winger for almost any situation.

Name: Justin de Mello
Position: Flyhalf
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 10 (2 tries)
Awards: Best on Ground (vs Lake Joondalup)
Comments: As usually the first player to receive the ball after every breakdown, the quality of a flyhalf in a team is paramount to its success. Fortunately for the Crusaders, that criterion has already been settled by Justin’s amazing skills around the field. His reliable boot relieves Kingsway in many situations and his cover defence, skilful running and lightning quick speed leave the choice of starting fly-half at no doubt. Justin is an excellent player and leader of the backline, without him, the team lacks spark.

Name: Shane de Mello
Position: Utility Forward
Year Level: 11
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: Best on Ground (vs Churchlands)
Comments: In 2002, Shane was undoubtedly Kingsway’s star player, running in an unbelievable six tries in only 7 games. A new season has seen none of last year’s glory gone with some sensational performances so far in 2003. His speed and agility were evident against Churchlands where he ran the best part of 70m to score a remarkable try. With uncontested scrums being the norm this season, Shane has shifted from his famous No. 7 Jersey to other positions in the scrum, doing an outstanding job in them every time. Whilst it was said last year, the same is still true today, Kingsway has two levels of achievement: the with and the without of Shane de Mello.

Name: Bobby Duncan
Position: Prop
Year Level: 10
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: Best on Ground (vs Lockridge) and People’s Best on Ground (vs Lockridge)
Comments: The Kingsway bulldozer has returned for the 2003 season bigger, better and more committed than ever. His scrummaging, driving and tackling qualities from last year have increased three folds and he has added a brilliant forward’s try to his name against Lockridge SHS. His performance in that game in particular was nothing short of outstanding, becoming the only player to date to be voted “People’s Best on Ground” and “Best on Ground” in the same game. Bobby is a magnificent player who will continue to create utter havoc for opposing sides.

Name: Michael Jacob
Position: Varies
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: None
Comments: As a player with talents in many positions around the park, Michael is used all around the field to aid the Kingsway team. Whether it be running nimbly and tackling hard in the backline or throwing in the ball in the lineouts, Mike has been used as a hooker, flanker and centre at different times throughout the 2003 Season. He has been a valuable all-round asset to the team in 2003 and will undoubtedly continue to be as the season reaches its conclusion.

Name: Matt Johnson
Position: Hooker
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: Best on Ground (vs Ocean Reef)
Comments: In 2003, only two new players joined the Kingsway Crusaders, Matt being one of them. Brought up from a traditional soccer background, Matt must be given credit for trying something new and a sport that he isn’t particularly familiar with. However, instead of waiting in the wings learning the new concepts of the game, Matt has taken on the game by storm, adapting remarkably quickly and easily to the aspects of Rugby. As well as this, his on field performances has been truly outstanding right from the beginning which is amazing considering he was thrown straight into the thick of things with no past experience, being the run on hooker. Matt has been an inspiration to all that have seen his growth in the sport, one that will be remembered for a long while to come.

Name: Tim Johnson
Position: Utility Forward
Year Level: 10
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: None
Comments: As the newest member to the Kingsway Crusaders, Tim has performed exceptionally well in his first game of rugby. Putting in a performance more worthy of a very experienced player, not a debutant, this brother of Matt made a last gasp tackles to save a certain try and almost score one of his own. As Tim becomes more experienced in the game, he will without doubt, if he continues at this rate, become one of the most prominent and invaluable forwards the Kingsway team possesses.

Name: Adam Litterick
Position: Wing
Year Level: 10
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: None
Comments: Small guy, big passion. Those are four words to describe this amazing winger on the Kingsway team. Being younger brother of big, burly Ross (and who probably gets a roughening up now and then), Adam has an incredibly hard work ethic, achieving a lot more than team mates twice his size. Against Lockridge, Adam’s tackles on their massive forwards was outstanding to watch as half the Kingsway forward pack were to scared even to try and tackle them. As well, against Ballajura, his “never give up” attitude meant he was able to push an opposition player onto the deadball line while he was in-goal, preventing what looked like a certain try. Adam is truly one whose work-rate is to be admired by all and an honour to have in the team.

Name: Ashley Page
Position: Number 8
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: None
Comments: When talking about a Number 8, many people have the picture of a tag-along at the back of the scrum that doesn’t do much work. In Ashley Page’s case, the truth in on completely the opposite end of the scale. His tackling, constant quick arrival at the breakdown and frightening speed has lead to the him calling the No. 8 jersey his own. His brilliant try against Churchlands from a pick up off the back of the scrum were Kingsway’s first points of the season. However he sustained an injury to his hand in May bringing a premature end to his promising season. From all the Kingsway Crusaders, bad luck Ashley and thank you for your contribution to the team in 2003.

Name: Tim Robertson
Position: Utility Forward
Year Level: 11
Points Scored in 2003: 6 (3 conversions)
Goal-Kicking Performance in 2003: 3 from 3 (100%)
Awards: None
Comments: In the world of writing about people, you don’t normally confront the problem of writing about yourself. If I were to write all cool and good stuff about me (which wouldn’t exist anyway) people would say I was bragging and if I was to write bad stuff about myself people would say I was a sceptic. So lets just say my name’s Tim, I’m a forward (usually Lock) and I play and referee Rugby and leave it at that. It would be pretty try-hard and salvo if I was to say any more;)

Name: Byron Sparg
Position: Centre
Year Level: 10
Points Scored in 2003: 4 (2 conversions)
Goal-Kicking Performance in 2003: 2 from 9 (22%)
Awards: None
Comments: To find a player more into Rugby than Byron would be as tough a bet as finding an ice-hockey supporter in Egypt. He has had it all, numerous years of club rugby, selection for his respective age’s state squad, a starting berth in the Kingsway team, a childhood in Rugby mad South Africa and life-long passion for his beloved Springboks. All this wealth of experience is duly reflected by his brilliance on field. His lethal boot has proved Kingsway’s biggest weapon on the scoreboard and this point-scoring machine will continue to generate conversions and penalties from all angles as the season progresses. Without Byron, the Kingsway backline lacks attacking desire and he is also a key player in the scoring of tries. Overall, Byron in a sensational, consistent player on the team and a great role model for all that play along side him.

Name: Stanley Southwood
Position: Wing
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: None
Comments: Blink, and you would have missed it. When this cross-country trained winger gets the ball that’s exactly what happens. As one of 5 players in the team from South Africa, Stanley lacks no knowledge of the fundamental aspects of the game. His ability to put this knowledge into practice of the field has been truly remarkable. Joining the team in late 2002 and scoring a sensational try against Forrestfield in only his second match, Stanley’s speed around the park is frightening and he constantly leaves his opposing winger in the dust trying valiantly to bring him down, but generally all in vain. His try against Lake Joondalup was a testament to his speed as he skilfully outran the opposition players to dart the ball down in the in-goal. Unfortunately, Stan has been unavailable for selection for large periods of the season but hopefully the last few games will be played with the services of this invaluable player.

Name: Jeremy Tan
Position: Wing
Year Level: 11
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: None
Comments: Born in Singapore, Jeremy is fast becoming one of Kingsway’s most prominent wingers. Week in week out, he puts in a 100% effort in all areas of his constantly improving game. His work rate is second to none and his tackling, running and field position set a high benchmark for other wingers in the game to follow. Being still a relatively new player to Rugby with only one prior season’s experience, Jeremy’s improvement has been quite remarkable and his perseverance in what he does is something that has earned him high respect amoung many.

Name: Keith Thai
Position: Utility Forward
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: People’s Best on Ground (vs Churchlands)
Comments: Keith’s tackling ability surprised many in 2002 considering he was a first timer at the game. In 2003, none of this has changed, if anything, it has improved. But what has been the remarkable change in Keith’s game is his new running ability. His amazing strength in the rucks and mauls has been illustrated by his move from the backs to the forwards, creating huge headaches for opposing forward packs. As well, his commitment to the team remains 100% making him a fantastic player to have on the team and one well worthy of his usual starting position.

Name: Hamish Thomson
Position: Fullback
Year Level: 11
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: Best on Ground (vs Newman) and Best on Ground (vs Ballajura)
Comments: After being trialed at fullback early in 2002, Hamish has proved himself as probably the most consistent performer of the Kingsway team, now calling the No. 15 jersey his own. Hailed by one in the Player of the Year Nominations as “The Almighty Fullback” (or was that Hamish voting?), Hamish is a sensational player and one who puts in a huge effort every game. Whether it be his excellent kicks for touch, saving 5 pointers in the last line of defence or joining the line in attack, Hamish’s all-round game lacks little. He has also been the only player to win two Best on Ground awards this year putting in strong performances against Newman and Ballajura. This probably makes 1991 Wallaby coach Bob Dwyer’s comments to Tim Horan relevant to Hamish as well: “Its not a question of whether you play good or bad, rather it’s a question of whether you’ll play good or excellent.”

Name: Jason Wakefield
Position: Scrumhalf
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: None
Awards: None
Comments: As probably the holder of the most important position in the team, Jason’s skills at scrumhalf are simply outstanding. His amazing speed to the breakdown ensures Kingsway constantly receives quick ball and his composure in difficult situations makes him and flyhalf Justin de Mello the perfect duo. Born in Zimbabwe hence the nickname “Zim,” Jason’s team mates are also reflective of his commitment to the team and the effort he puts into it. One member of the team who deserves to remain anonymous wrote in a feedback report about this website, “No-one seems to notice how hard he [Jason] tries just to earn a bit of respect from his team. Little do we know at what tactics are going through this young man's head as he plays willingly and honourably. I would just like everyone to give him a bit of credit now and then for our team wouldn't be a team without each and every one of us including our half-back.”

Name: Brendan Wight
Position: Wing
Year Level: 12
Points Scored in 2003: 5 (1 try)
Awards: None
Comments: As a new person to Rugby in 2003, Brendan has shown remarkable talents and tactical decisions that would only normally displayed in a player with a host of years of experience. His brilliant running and quick speed has already seen him score a great backs’ try against Churchlands and almost another against Ballajura. His kicking ability is also superb, a number of times relieving Kingsway from continued opponent onslaught. By the end of the season, Brendan will have grown a lot his knowledge and skills in the game bringing to conclusion a season that has seen him become one of Kingsway’s most improved players.
